ENVIS Centre join hands with RCE Chandigarh Partners to Collect Data on ESD through Public Contact

A ‘Workshop on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)’ was jointly organized by ENVIS Centre & Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) Chandigarh on 18th December, 2012 at PSCST office. The workshop provided a forum for discussing the issue of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The focus of interaction was to assess the current status, nature of ESD related activities and good practices implemented by RCE Chandigarh partners in the region. Its objective was also to explore opportunities for collaborative efforts for addressing ESD related issues at local level and with RCE  Srinagar.

 Forty five participants from departments, universities/colleges, schools, NGOs and PSCST officials attended the event. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Neelima Jerath, Executive Director PSCST / Head RCE Chandigarh. She gave an overview of global RCE network and shared her experiences of ‘The 7th Global RCE Conference Tongyeong’ Republic of Korea held on September 21st -24th, 2012 while delivering her inaugural address. Dr. Abdhesh Gangwar, Director Centre for Environment Education (CEE) – Himalaya delivered a talk on ‘Strengthening RCE Network & Collaborative Opportunities’. Ms. Ravleen Singh (SPO - ENVIS) gave a presentation on ESD activities undertaken by RCE Chandigarh.

A lively debate evolved amongst participants who presented their own perspectives on this issue and their initiatives on ESD. Brainstorming session was followed by a presentation on ‘Sustainable Development & Climate Change (Carbon Sequestration)’ by Prof. Dr. A.D. Ahluwalia. The workshop ended with a joint commitment by all to toil in the direction of ESD and accelerate small steps at local level so as to add to giant leaps at global level. The Centre proposed to compile the important ESD initiatives of the participants in its Newsletter. An exhibition on ENVIS publications was also organized.
