Punjab Biodiversity Board (PBB) was notified by Govt. of Punjab in Dec., 2004 as a statutory body u/s 22 of Biological Diversity Act, 2002 for ensuring implementation of Biological Diversity Act, 2002 in the state to conserve the biological diversity, encourage sustainable use of biological resources and ensure fair & equitable sharing of the benefits arising from use of biological/genetic resources.

Constitution of Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs)

PBB facilitated constitution of 13456 BMCs (March 2020) by concerned local bodies u/s 41 of Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and Rule 22 of Biological Diversity Rules, 2014 as per the following details.

Panchayati Raj institutions

·         Zila Parishad Level : 22

·         Block Samiti Level : 150

·         Gram Panchayat Level : 13221

Urban Local bodies

·         Municipal Corporation/Councils  : 63

Preparation of People’s Biodiversity Registers (PBRs)

One of the most important mandates of the BMCs is preparation of PBRs for the documentation of the local flora & fauna. Technical support extended by PBB to nodal departments i.e. Department of Rural Development & Panchayat and Department of Local Government to facilitate the preparation of PBRs by concerned BMCs as per the prescribed guidelines of National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) as per following details.
