To fulfill the increased demand of energy due to rapid growth of economy, energy efficiency is the key driving force to fulfill the energy demand as well as meet the climatic goals. Considering the vast potential of energy savings and benefits of energy efficiency, the Government of India enacted the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.pdf (Amended in 2010) with the goal of reducing energy intensity of Indian economy and established Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in 2002. The Act provides the legal framework, institutional arrangement and a regulatory mechanism at the Central and State level to embark upon energy efficiency drive in the Country. Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), has initiated a number of energy efficiency initiatives in the areas of household lighting, commercial buildings, standards and labeling of appliances, demand side management in agriculture/municipalities, Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SME's), and large industries including the initiation of the process for development of energy consumption norms for industrial sub sectors, capacity building of SDA's etc. The major flagship programmes initiated by BEE to promote the energy efficiency drive in the country includes:
