The state government has set up an international-level state-of-the-art Nucleus Farm at Nabha to supply parent stock for piglet production. About 4,000 piglets will be supplied to the farmers to set up their new pig units annually.

In a press note, state Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu said to enhance the annual income of farmers under the agricultural diversification programme, the state government has launched several initiatives to boost productivity as well as quality of pig farms.

Divulging the statics of the pig farms in the state, he said, “The state has around 817 organised pig farms which have 26,000 pigs.” He added that the total population of pigs in the state was around 60,000 and now the department was working in the direction of scientific improvement to increase the population of pigs to meet the demand of the national as well as international markets.

“To enhance the productivity and quality of pigs, a modern semen bank is also being established for scientific breeding at Nabha which will prove a game-changer to enhance the productivity of pig farms,” he added.
