To ensure a clean and green environment in Mohali district, a large-scale plantation drive will be carried out in the sub-mountainous kandi area.

Deputy Commissioner Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu, who was starting a drive by planting a sapling of sagwan tree at Mullanpur, said more than 2 lakh saplings would be planted in the kandi area.

The Chairperson, Zila Parishad, Paramjit Kaur Badali, Jathedar Ujagar Singh Badali, president, Akali Jatha (Rural), also took part in the plantation campaign.

The Deputy Commissioner said the plantation drive had been started in cooperation with village panchayats and social service organisations of the area.

As many as 50,000 pits had also been prepared by the Forest Department for saplings. Saplings of trees would be provided by the Forest Department free of cost. In the sub-mountainous area, saplings of khair, tahli, kikkar, daik, safeda, jamun, etc, would be planted.

Deputy Commissioner Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu said during this season, 150 acres of degraded area would be used for planting various types of saplings.

Later, the Deputy Commissioner initiated a plantation drive at the Siswan dam.
