The state government has released compensation to the tune of Rs2.98 crore for the farmers of the district who had uprooted their damaged cotton crop last month.

Hundreds of farmers in the district had ploughed standing cotton crop over 3,727 acres that was eaten up by whitefly.

“We have received Rs2.98 crore. The SDMs of Fazilka, Abohar and Jalalabad will start disbursing the compensation from tomorrow,” said Ravinder Singh, Deputy Commissioner.

He said the work of conducting special girdawari to assess the loss for partially and completely damaged cotton crop was in progress for the last one week. “At least 30 teams were constituted for the purpose,” he said.
