The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has been working on the solid waste management quite hard ever since the city slipped in its ranking from top to 21in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
The UT’s solid waste management and urban mobility is likely to get the touch of Copenhagen.
Bhawna Garg, commissioner, municipal corporation, who visited Copenhagen in Denmark, said they have asked the corporation authorities there to come over to Chandigarh and study so that the said projects can be implemented here.
“ The solid waste management system is highly appealing there. The segregation of the waste into organic and inorganic is done at the household level itself,” said Garg.
She added, “ Forty to 50 years ago, even these cities were the same like Chandigarh. So it would be better if we learn faster than them.”
Garg said the most important thing she found should be implemented here was the cycle-able and walkable environment that Copenhagen has. “ They have more open green spaces that we can start developing from Sector 17.
Urban mobility has been made so convenient because there people either walk or use cycles. Health wise and environment wise it is so viable,” added the commissioner.

The survey conducted during 2014-15 was commissioned by the ministry of urban development as required under the National Sanitation Policy of 2008.
The city generates 350-400 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily that is managed by the municipal corporation.
There is a garbage processing plant in Dadu Majra, which, at present, is processing approximately 75 per cent of the garbage while the rest is being dumped at the dumping ground without processing.
Parking menace is another issue that is being worked upon by the municipal corporation after the administration’s warning to streamline the same.
