Though all the dead fish have been removed from the holy Kali Bein, the government has failed to stop sewage and effluents of 22 villages and four towns from flowing into the rivulet. The pollution was caused as six treatment plants in the vicinity of the Bein are not functioning properly. Even though the construction of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) at Bholath and Begowal has been completed, most of the sewage of the towns flows into the Kali Bein. The STP in Dasuya doesn’t function and the one in Sultanpur Lodhi is only treating urban waste. Environmentalist Balbir Seechewal said, “Unless the flow of sewage into the Kali Bein is plugged, the efforts to conserve it will not bear fruit.” Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner DS Mangat said, “The sewerage board officials visited the spot today. They said money for the Kapurthala STP will be released soon. Another modern STP is coming up at Sultanpur Lodhi which will process the rural waste of the town.”
